CHAPTER 23

The chatter around the room quietens, and Ares turns his attention back to Zeus. The god has stepped onto a dais and has his hands raised in the air. Like the rest of the gods, he’s larger than life. His hair is a shining fall of gold that tumbles over his shoulders. Unlike almost everyone else in the room, Zeus and Hera are wearing outfits that I most associate with traditional ancient Greek clothing. Zeus has on a knee-length tunic that fastens at one shoulder, leaving the other exposed. I know from my sad public-school education that these are called a chiton because this was the shit that was more important than learning how to budget the meager amounts of money we’d earn in our life.

Next to Zeus, Hera is wearing a similar cream-colored chiton, with a band of fabric wrapping around her small waist. Her dress flows all the way to the ground. She’s the opposite of Zeus. Where he’s golden, she is dark. Her hair is black as the night, and her eyes look just as shadowy. Her skin is so pale she could be one of the fucked up human statues situated around the garden. Preston is close to her side, and she gives him an indulgent smile. That’s all I need to see to know that Hera is a giant nope for me. I’m going to steer clear.

“Welcome. Hera and I are thrilled to see the games finally back in our territory.” He waits for applause, and the audience obliges. “What an impressive batch of champions we have this year.” Zeus grins as his gaze drifts over the room. He pauses briefly on me before his eyes flit away dismissively.

“These games were created two decades ago to bring the world together.”

Ares snorts next to me, but I don’t dare look away from Zeus. Especially when his eyes narrow slightly. He’s not even looking in our direction.

“This is our way of connecting with our people. To show them how benevolent we can be. I think we all know the winning champion will never want for a thing in their life.” Zeus chuckles and gestures out to the crowd.

I drag my eyes from the Olympian and study the other guests at the party. There are a lot of people in suits, making it look like a business social hour more than anything, but there are others who don’t fit the mold of a stuffy elite. They’re too fit, too good-looking. It dawns on me who they are when I see one man in particular. He was in the games the year my mother died. They’re the winners of the past games.

My fingers clench my glass so hard the stem snaps.

“Shit,” I hiss, dropping my eyes to the two pieces of my glass and the drop of blood that drips down my palm.

The heat of Ares’s curious gaze fixed on me has me wanting to panic. Instead, I do a quick search and decide to drop my mangled glass in a potted plant behind me.
